Working with the Fishers Fire Department
About the Fire Department:
The Fishers Fire Department is an influential aspect in our community. They help community members all over Fishers, and are typically the first responders in situations. If there are problems within your house, or if you or a pet get stuck somewhere, the fire department will be there! These are hardworking women and men who serve time and time again for the city of Fishers. The Fire Department wants to welcome more people to come and take tours, go to functions, and be active with the Fire Department.
Challenge Question:
How can the fire department create a program to interact and educate older teenagers, such as the high school and the junior high?
How can Captain John Mehling have fun things to post from schools and fire stations, without publicity problems?
Lastly, how can Mr. Mehling gain more followers on social media?
Why did I choose this challenge?
I was really interested in a challenge that would be about connecting more people. I loved that this was something that allowed me to make an impact in my community and it would carry over to my school. This was perfect for me!

Project Timeline:
Week One: Meet Mr. Mehling and get a better understanding of the task at hand.
Week Two: Brainstorm as many crazy Ideas as possible!
Week Three: Meet with Mr. Mehling and see how the ideas suite with him. There were a lot of dilemmas that we ran into.
Week Four: Back to the drawing board! Mr. G. challenged us to get more creative and really try to stretch our imagination. We came up with some great ideas! We also wrote our scripts for our videos.
Week Five: We made our final video!
Week Six: This was our biggest week. We made our budget, our app proposal, and our final powerpoint. This was the last week before the big presentation!
Week Seven: Final presentation!
Contribution:
Personally, the project was something I was passionate about and it was fun! The workload may seem heavy, but it was all something that I did in my spare time. The first main task that I accomplished with my group was creating scripts for every video that we want to instill for the high school and junior high. We had a fun time coming up with ideas at McCallister's. Then the work really hit hard in the last week. One of my main focuses was preparing the virtual reality for our presentation. This was challenging because it was an area I knew little about and had a lot of research to do. Following a couple of days in the library, my research was done and I had a plan. The next step was to plan out the stations for the Fire Safety Day at the junior high. My team went to the drawing board and created the best way to get 100 kids through 3 stations in one hour. After this was accomplished, my next move was to make a kick butt PowerPoint! I took all of the information my group had put together and make it something that was easy to present, and when over all of the questions.
Takeaways:
I learned a lot about group dynamics. Throughout my group, it started very well with good communication and enthusiastic work effort. As the month continued, we became friends and although sometimes it took longer for work to get done it was still fun and quality products were produced. Towards the last week and half, we became very short on time and we started to have issues within our group dynamic. Heated fights were started. There were disagreements. However, one day before the final proposal we managed to pull ourselves together and have an amazing presentation. I learned that when there are fights it isn't about who is right or wrong it is all about the best interest of the customer, in this case the Fishers Fire Department.
