My Deck of Cards
My high cards!
In my opinion one of my strong suits is creativity. A quick example is in my ACP Psych class. We were given two minutes to come up with as many uses for a paperclip. At the very end, I had 17 ideas while many of my peers had under 10. This shows how I am always thinking out of the box and trying to find another way about things. Also at work, where I teach kids to swim, we have weekly cannon ball contests with our older kids. All the other workers play the same game every week, but when I am in charge I like to change the category. For example, biggest splash or loudest chant! Another one of my strong suits is complex problem solving. When a question or a challenge is presented to the class, typically I am one of the first people to have an idea and get people moving. One example of my problem solving is when I am teaching kids how to swim at work or being a counselor at Camp Tecumseh. In both of these circumstances lessons may have taken a shorter time than expected and all this kids are looking at you to fill the time. Quickly, I have to find something that is safe, fun, and actually helps them learn. |
My losing hand!
All of us have skills that we are not always our best at. For me, one of them would be my cognitive flexibility. I am a defiant and strong minded person, which makes it really challenging for me to be flexible and always listen to others. Also, I prefer to have my life laid out with all the details available. If one is messed up then I can have a hard time being flexible. In order to start improving this aspect of myself it may help to leave some time unplanned. If I have no idea of how I want spend the time, I'll be more likely to do what someone else may want to do. It's ironice but it may work; make time for spontaneity. Another skill I am working on is coordinating with others. Lately, for one of my group projects our communication has been poor, along with our understanding of situations. We haven't been very coordinated and it has caused our project to become chaotic. To fix this, I think laying out my thoughts and team decisions are a good idea. Write it out, affirm it with my partners, and go from there. This way if anything goes awry we have something to look back on to show what we originally agreed to. |
Passion Project Time! |
It's a new semester and the HSE Innovation's class is back in action! The first month of our new semester has been a little rough but slowly and surely I am finding my way. Originally, I was trying to create a TEDEd club, however I have been figuring out this is not something I am truly interested. After a week, my passion began to run dry. Now I am starting to create a challenge night for HSE, where students and community members can join together to ideate. This is a very similar event to the one Noblesville hosted. Along with this I am continuing to work with the Fishers Fire Department, which I am so ecstatic for!!
If you or anyone know anyone interested in speaking or joining a challenge nigh message me on my "Contact Me" page! |

Field Trip to Fail FestOur Innovations class took a bus to downtown Indianapolis. In the building where LaundIndy grows, we listened to speakers who talked about their struggles which led them to success. I found it inspiring to hear about people who didn't gloss over their failures, talked about the reality of their struggles, and took pride in them. We heard from local community members, such as the Chief of the Fire Department, and we heard from creators, such as a man who went from hating writing to publishing a book.

Making an Impact
One of our projects was to influence someone's life for a week. Our teachers wanted us to take three steps, each one increasing in the level of challenge, to make an impact on someone. For my project I decided to dedicate a week to a close friend that I had been struggling with. In summary, we met on a Thursday night for coffee and talked about a lot of our issues and how we could re-start. Then I took my three steps, that led to us becoming closer again. Take a look at the powerpoint I created to understand my impact!

Learning Something NewMy innovations class gave us a week and a half to learn something completely new, or progress on a skill we may already have. I choose to learn how to drive a stick shift because it was something that I can use in my future and all my family members can drive one but me. I created a powerpoint that represented my progress and goals over the days that I attempted to learn. By the end of the trial, I did my best, but I wasn't perfect. In my powerpoint, I demonstrated my ideals versus the reality of learning this challenging task. It was a fun week and a half, although I would still say I am not the best at it!

Biography of An IdeaIt is important to understand the generation of ideas. In class we spent a week learning about ideas and where they come from and the challenges they face in order to grow and prosper. I choose to learn about Ted Talks and specifically the invention of TED. I choose this organization because I have been inspired by numerous speakers I have watched via YouTube. This has also created a personal goal l to one day talk on TED and broadcast my ideas with the world...but first I have to generate the idea!

Self-Discovery ProjectThis was the very first project we had for innovations. It was to figure out what makes us tick and as I learned that, I decided to make myself for my project. I spray painted the shoe boxes to represent my optimism and that how I like to take my first step in everything I do. Then I built my legs with the word confidence going down them. My confidence holds me up. Along the arms is competitive and drive, with the air hands saying goals. This is to represent how my competitiveness drives me to my goals. Finally, the balloon represents that I can be a bit of an air head (aka why competitive was originally spelt wrong on the project).
